Why is it easier to buy a dog then save one?

It annoys the poop out of me as well the way shelters act. I understand screening is a good thing but when they just make it impossible for you to even consider resuing a dog from death row it is unforgivable! These poor dogs need someone to love them and care for them and so many more would find good homes if they would be reasonable about their requirements. Most people don't have what some snoot deams necessary for them to have in order to save one of these poor animals. When in reality, the prospective owner most of the time, has more than adequate resources, housing and way more love to give than the animal would require!

It just fries my fanny to even think about it.

Same goes for cats/kittens too. They've made it such a hassle to rescue/adopt from shelters that they're shooting themselves in the foot. And the people that work at the shelter by my house are the unfriendliest people

I know it has to be hard working in those places but geez, we're trying to give good homes not pay a $100 or more to abuse the animal.

I've been turned down also because I don't have a fenced yard. I live on a farm where the dog would have had a good life, but they'd rather euthanize than adopt out I guess.

We filled out the paperwork at one pound and they didn't like our vet so no go.

Pat- Im not looking to save money the fee is about the same in this area. Its the hassle.

I found one that we are going to go to next. I have to call them first.

I looked for a rescue when we needed a livestock guardian dog to live with our flock and protect it from the hawks.

With the exception of one group, they all wouldn't adopt out LGDs to do the work they were bred to do. Most of them insisted the dogs spend most of their lives inside, or in a backyard instead of "abandoned on a farm" (their words). The one place I found that had rescued LGDs that allowed them to be worked wanted $250 for each dog, and one of them was heartworm-positive.

We ended up getting a pair of 5-month puppies (Great Pyrs) for $50 each, and they're doing an AWESOME job so far.

My favorite is how most insist you get them fixed. That is why I want a male. My other dogs are male...they live in my backyard and I do a fairly good job of keeping them in...anyone that has not had a dog escape at some point has not met my lab! When he was young he jumped the 6 ft fence and now that he is old he goes through the fence once in awhile...but they are watched and loved and not roaming around breeding everything...the cost to neuter at one point really made it hard to afford...I know if you can't afford that you can't afford a dog...NOT...found a friend with pups got one for free and never missed a meal and buy the shots myself!

I can see why they want them fixed. The shelters a round here: all animals are fully vetted, fixed, and are mirochiped before they leave the pound.

In most countries in Europe a lot of the animals are not fixed and yet the pounds are not overflowing with dogs. In New Zealand, again, most dogs aren't fixed and yet it is quite hard to find a dog to adopt. It's not about getting every poor animal 'neutralised' before it's old enough to go to kindergarten, it's about responsible people taking good care of their animals so that accidents don't happen. The poor animals are getting nipped and tucked way too young because too many people won't/can't/don't take proper care of them! That's what burns me. If people realised that neutering a pup before puberty can lead to joint problems, especially in very active dogs, and urinary incontinance in female dogs, perhaps the shelters etc wouldn't be so picky about getting pups fixed so early.

Craigslist is a good place to find unwanted pets.

Oh, and please, I'm not ragging on anyone in particular as I know how well the critters are taken care of on this list.

Another way to get a cheap dog is check, your local "swapper" papers and newspaper.Sometimes you will see free pups or the owner has a fully trained dog, but has to move.
