WHy is it good to NOT CARE what others think?

I dont care enough, so I will take the Idiot comment to heart, and I have always thought you were nuts, but didnt want to say anything, because I do care, just not ENOUGH. I am just happy to finally let the cat out of the bag, and am happy that it is fine with you.

Well....first off I just have to say....

WELCOME BACK DAVEROO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was missing you man!

Now, on to this thread....
I have to watch what I type here because as you can prolly tell from my icon, I'm politically minded and I really don't want to start up THAT train of thought...

But in my opinion...I think everyone on earth (with the exception of the mentally ill or severely abused) has a sense of moral right and wrong. You just know in your gut when something is not right OR you know in your gut when something is right! If you can go to sleep at night with a good conscience then you are on the right track.

In my opinion society today has been made numb to what we know is right or wrong and told that not caring that we are numb is ok because we DESERVE not to worry about what others think and we work darn hard and DESERVE to have whatever makes us happy.
BUT...before you think too far into the above comment it is also my opinion that we should NOT be forced to take care of the poor, the hungry, the (insert a less fortunate here)...

What I think (again, just my opinion) is that it does not take a village to raise my child...it takes ME...because my child is my responsibility...and to ask YOU to be forced to pay for my lack of responsibility (or lack of ability to get a job, or insert that less fortunate item again....) is not right either.

Should I care what others think of me??? Yes and No, I should want to be a good role model because in my heart I know what the right thing to do is...and if some folks think that's great...then yea for me...if they think I'm a simpleton..well then I don't have to care...because I know that is was right.

Should I want to help care for the needy, the hungry, the hurt and abused??? Yes and No....Yes I should because in my heart I know it is the right thing to do....but NO I shouldn't be forced to do it...because my first responsibility is to MY dependants and if giving to the needy makes me less able to care for my dependants then I have now made myself someone elses burden.

Should we follow pop culture and enjoy the strives and or stumbles they make??? Sure, because they are ENTERTAINMENT but they are NOT role models...

So in summary....Do I want you to like me? Yes, it's human nature. Will I change my character if you don't? No, because in my heart I know I try my best to do the morally right thing... Do I think we've been lead astray??? Yes, and while I want you to be happy and do what makes you happy, I don't want you to hurt me in the process...and if you can lend me a hand along the way, please do....I promise to return the favor.

In keeping with the subject of the thread, may I contribute a quote (as best I remember it) from a wise sister of mine:

"Life is too short to not be lived the way you believe. If you're going to live your life based on whims of popular opinion that change every day, why live?"

but in our nation we seem to obsess what people think about us, that is why we have so many people who have eating disorders, and mental disorders because we are so concerned about how other people see us
hit.gif
most of the models look so skinny that a lot of girls try to perfect their image and it is impossible for these girl too, most of them need to sit down and eat something.

My mother also taught me to stand up and believe in what I believe in and voice my opinions weather anyone wants to listen or not.

. Two years ago I was diagnosed with a life threatening condition that was a result from treatment from another condition, I was told I was eligible for make a wish, I met with the people who set it up, but then denied because I couldn't get it for my life threatening condition but I have meet other people have gone on make a wish and went on trips for my original condition or for non-life threatening condition.

So until I become as successful as Madonna why should I care about what other people think of me

as I reach my goals as long as I don't harm other or my self.

Intentionally stretching the point a bit, aren't you? Prisons are where we put criminals, the crimes typically are killing someone, stealing something, rape, assault and battery.

Near as I can tell, prisons are where we put poor people who do the same things rich folks do--mainly for illegal drug offenses as fowltemptress mentioned, but also for the behaviors you mention. If a rich guy (hey, we can think of several Massachusetts politicians in this instance!) kills someone, assaults someone, rapes someone, gets caught with illegal drugs, miraculously they not only keep their job as a legislator, but they pay a fine and a bunch of lawyers and go on their merry way. If a common citizen of Roxbury or Dorchester does the same, it's a life sentence. So no, I don't think that prisons are where we put criminals, I think they're where we put poor people who can't afford a spendy lawyer and get stuck with the public defenders. The vast majority of crimes for which people are imprisoned are nonviolent; the violent offenses you mention make up about 1/10th of the convictions. That tells me that 90% of the prisoners we have are nonviolent people, who have not done any of the things you mention, and yet we are throwing them into an environment where they learn to be extremely violent.

I'm saying the legal system is far more complex and buggered-up than the simple dichotomy which you are proposing, that might does not make right, and that the simple definition of "if a majority thinks thus, it must be true" is not a good source of ethical guidance because there are several examples in real life where that was plainly false. I'm saying that cultural trends are not a substitute for principles, integrity and courage. I realize this is always an unpopular stance, but I'm afraid it's mine. If you feel the overwhelming urge to burn me at the stake, well, I am prepared to be understanding.

In some ways this attitude has allowed us to get where we are. No one thinks anything of a couple shacking up instead of getting married, unwed pregnancies, cheating on taxes, etc.

BTW, I'm about the biggest NON-fan of Madonna that I know. If she's in a movie, I refuse to watch it.
