WHy is it good to NOT CARE what others think?

I didn't read all the replies, but it's a good time I think to bring up an important point. The Consitution of the United States is based on Public Virtue. Meaning doing the right thing for the good of the majority. In that case it's a good thing to care what others think. However since I think the majority has gone to the dumps and we no long practice Public Virtue (another reason the Constution no longer works) It's important now to do the right thing just because it's right. No matter what others think, but it's not ok to do what's wrong no matter what others think. So Rebellion is a bad thing, doing wrong is a bad thing, but caring what others think depends on what others think.

Lord have mercy, Dave. I gotta apologize today for my bringing down American society. I try not to, but sometimes there ain't a thing I can do.

Today I took the dog to the state park with me to go fishing. Well, the dog was feeling pretty frisky with all the other dogs around, and we had a ways to hike out to a good fishing spot. However, I had my tacklebox in a backpack, my rod in one hand, and my ice chest in another. So I clipped the dog's leash to my belt loops. It seemed like a good idea at the time.

Sure enough, we round a bend in the path and there's someone else fishing with their dog, only their dog is not so friendly and has a three-year-old holding its leash. Their dog tried to attack my dog, dragging the three-year-old with it, and my dog being the well-trained angel of a Pyrenees that he is, quickly backed away from the whole situation.

Thing is, my dog was backing away faster than I could hustle with a full backpack and both hands full o' fishing gear. Guess where my pants ended up before I could get my good doggie to stop pulling on the leash?

Hey, at least I had on clean and modest underwear! First thing I thought, "Oh lord, Daveroo will be so disappointed in me."​

The lack of respect is pervasive. I heard a great (or terrible) example of it the other day. There's a new law here in MA, first offense speeding under 18, you lose your license. Period. Then you have to take a course and pay a hefty fine. There were four young offenders in the courtroom and when they heard they were losing their licenses they went crazy, swearing at everyone, screaming, telling them all how stupid they were, how stupid it was, using words I can't put on this forum. In a courtroom! With their own parents sitting right there with them! And do you think any of those parents stopped their offspring from being complete jack*ss*s? Not a chance. That is one huge part of what's wrong today. Parents who don't parent.

Parents think they should be their kids' friends. Sorry, parents, that's not your job, it's to be a parent. If I had been in court acting up like that you'd bet your bottom dollar my father would have had plenty to say to me - but then again, I'd never do that in a court, it wouldn't even occur to me. For that matter, I've had one speeding ticket my whole life, when I was 19 and the speedo was broken on my car - it actually wasn't a ticket, but a warning. But I digress.

If one of my boys had acted like that I'd tell the judge to lock him up for awhile. But I wasn't a parent in that courtroom. I guess there really weren't any real parents there.....

They don't even remember that the world could be a kinder place if we just cared about one another a little bit. A lot of people won't lead others by starting the traditions over again cause no one else does it any more. I'm only 15 now but even i can tell that attitude won't get me very far. (unless i'm really really lucky)

Oh, Madonna cares what other people think. She's been widely known for having an extremely limited voice range and equally limited talent, but she is an extraordinarily good businesswoman. She writes her "music" and performs according to what people are willing to buy and regularly changes her appearance and style according to emerging trends. Just about everything she does is calculated, no doubt certain personal choices as well.

Personally, as a music and movie fanatic, I think that her music and performances rank near the bottom of the list of every possible performer. But for almost 30 years, that woman has been right on top of what people think. I would be surprised in fact if she had an original thought in her head.

As for me, I care about what other people think if I value their opinions. Otherwise, no.

I think there are very few people in this world that really don't care what others think about them. Many will say that they don't but I think that they are either trying to convince themselves or are sadly disillusioned. They may play around with semantics but when you really get down to it they do care.

I feel that if you don't care what people think about you and you act accordingly, that is without a conscience or morals, you do not belong in our society. If you say you don't care but still act in accordance with the mores then do you really not care?
