Why is it that Americans need Hyperbole ?

Thanks Elizabeth......

Kind of what I gathered was the question - hence my response. although I missed the part about the states not liking each other.

I think that is a misguided assumption. When the country was being formed we had regions, territories. This is a BIG country and even before most of it was "discovered" the countries who were staking their claim did so in chunks of land. England had most of the east coast, Florida was Spain's, Louisiana was claimed by the french and Texas and most of the south west was still claimed by Mexico.

It was easier to govern and much like the counties in the UK, were controlled by some nobleman or another. As we grew, it was a formula that was kept. Each state has it's own government and system. However, they country as a whole has it's system as well. State's rights are foremost in most cases, but the federal government helps to level the political and legal playing field.

Economically it made sense, back before the country was a unified entity there were several different forms of currency. It got really confusing. You could compare the concept to that of the EU...one money system makes things so much easier.

Strategically it made sense. Most states didn't have the capabilities to defend themselves from invasions. Working together, they were able to be a united front against invasions.

However, we are the UNITED states of America. Just as England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales are the UNITED Kingdom. Would you say that England hates Scotland? or vise versa? No more than say Alabama hates Colorado? They are part of a team. Sure there are differences, but that makes it interesting and amazing to live here. It doesn't mean the states are "pretending" to get along. I think on the whole we do get along and we enjoy the benefits unity brings us as a country.

We had an Englishman working for our company for a little while. He was there's sweetest guy ever but sometimes I just could not for te life of myself figure out what he was trying to tell me.

Well anyhow- I hope you find the answer you're looking for now that we have a real bona-fide translator!

Also to add something that might put things into perspective for you!
I am from Texas which is kind of like a country to its own. We have our own power grid, oil, natural gas reserves. We are very indapendant from the U.S. in many ways. People here in Texas are more proud to be Texan than American to tell you the truth. I have heard many Texans that actually want to seceed from the united states, I think we are the only state who can legally. We are unlike any other state, and MOST of our state is conservative, right wing. If you want flag waving national pride come to Texas. We are VERY proud that we seperated from Mexico and joined the U.S. We also are the only state to have our own military. Iv'e heard some people compare us to Germany in the EU. We are one of the states that have done the best in the recession as well. Anyways, as a whole none of the states hate eachother. We work as a country, but each state is seperate. If that makes any sense to you?

FANTASTIC !

This is the articulate and informed info I was fishing for. Thanks.

The UK shifts around a bit with the "Devolution" of Wales, Scotland and the situation in Ireland. They now have seperate parliment and are prety much seperate. The next step some want (in scotland most atm) is to seperate from the Union... A bit extreme considering we had a scot for PM until a while ago.

There is a strange situation here. (imho)... We have Scotland (proud & loud), Wales (proud & loud), Ireland (Special case) and GREAT BRITAIN ...... I'm told there is an England somewhere ... lol.

Aww, poor Ireland.

I think perhaps this was a throwback from when the Queen had India and the like. Remember when it was all hers? So now that it's not, she still wants to claim it is. Ha. Maybe.

I have worked with folks from New Zealand, Australia, England, India, Iraq, China, Japan...many other places...and US.

There are zealots of all kinds, and we are mainly a product of what we were exposed to as we grew up. In the US, we are pretty far off from the discretion many other cultures MUST practice regarding personal opinion and religion- but we don't have to worry about the sort of persecution others have to consider.

If the rest of the world were as accustomed to being able to voice their thoughts (even to inserting feet into their mouths...) they might find it quite comfortable blathering about whatever they wanted. Sadly, it's not an incredibly attractive feature, always. But it is a freedom we enjoy, and some take it to extremes others don't.

I always love when people say things like " I mean no disrespect", having no common sense that , that is exactly what they are doing. You are being disrespectful whether you mean to be or not. In all the years I've been on this forum I have never seen a rant like this. In spite of the fact that I disagree with English politics i would never insult my friends and family who live there and here.

What I wonder is that in spite of the fact that America is so hated , foreigners still want to live here.

"for all their faults and all nations have them, the US are a force for good; they have liberal and democratic traditions of which any nation can be proud. I sometimes think it is a good rule of thumb to ask of a country: are people trying to get into it, or out of it? It's not a bad guide to what kind of country it is." - Tony Blair in his address to British Ambassadors, London Jan. 2003

Respectfully yours
