We had five or six Buff Orps go broody last year, right after they first started laying. We didn't know what to do about it so we finally let them have eggs. They hatched 8 among them, 4 of whom survived (hawks, mostly). This year only one made a half-hearted attempt to brood and, pretty much following @aart's instructions, we convinced her otherwise pretty quickly.
