why is rooster crowing in the dark?

There is a large cow pasture across the street from us. Everyyear when calves are separated from their mothers the ranch puts the mother cows in that pasture and the calves go to the other end of their property. The mothers moo and moan all night for several days before things quiet down again. Our old dog doesn't hear very well any more so he has finally stopped barking at them.

There could be some light from the neighbours (maybe motion activated?) That's waking him

we do have motion lights to scare away predators. could be the reason
