why is rooster crowing in the dark?

So I was up at 4:20 am. Sunrise is til later. My silky rooster was in the coop, in the dark crowing? Is this normall behavior? There is no light in there either.

The presence of a predator, a sound, a light on in the house or yard - many things can trigger crowing.

When he was the lone rooster on the property, Sir Henry the Loud, a mature Iowa Blue, generally began crowing at about 3 or 4 a.m. This spring, Billy Boy, a Blue Cochin Bantam rooster chick, came to live with here -- in a separate coop.

Now, they both start crowing in the wee hours. So, your boy seems normal to me.

They can crow at any old time. It's irritating but normal. If you have the room, you might want to move your coop further away from the house.

Yep.

I hear Ludwig crowing when I'm up for the bathroom in the wee hours.

It's a rooster thing.

@Ursurline Chick, my Bantam boy is not NEARLY as loud as the full-size boy. I think Billy Boy would crow less often, except that he's trying to match Sir Henry, crow for crow. Good luck with your boy!
