why is there # sizes?

Cutler Supply has a leg band chart, but for some reason I can't get it to open right now.

This chart is for hens, not roosters. You need bigger bands for the roosters of the breeds listed. I don't know how much bigger, I used zip ties for my roosters. But these work for my hens.

Wrap the chicken in a large towel, wrapping the wings. As long as you don't suffocate it, you can also cover the head, but I've never had to do that.

oh so roosters have diffrent size leg bands too i thought the same breed would be able to have the same size band hen or rooster i thought it would fit all

It probably should. I have some metal leg bands (I don't know what the style is called, but you use a pair of pliers to put it on) and they work fine for everything from Old English bantams all the way up to Plymouth Rock roosters because they're adjustable. I think they came from McMurray hatchery originally, I got them secondhand from someone who bought them and never used them.
