Why rat traps are uselss for rats

Here's the little guy I caught in a chipmunk/squirrel trap.

Comparing his head to the rat traps I wasted money on, if he put his snout on the bait to set it off, the bar would have slammed down between his eyes and ears. Those rat traps need to be 2x as large to slam down over the neck!!!


So in the last 24 hours, I have stomped one with my shoe coop cleaning, hit two with the shovel as they tried to escape, and now finally disposed of this big one.

Wow, yeah, traps didn't work here either. I finally resorted to poison since nothing worked for the nasty buggars!

That thing is huge, rat trap heck you need a .22 to dispose of something that big.

You are so right about city rats. When I first moved to Seattle I lived downtown for years. Used to see huge rats in the city.

I've killed wharf rats using canned sardines ..... just need a good aim and throwing arm.

Now you know why I tolerate the yellow rat snakes we have here. LOL, we have relocated a gazbillion this year and still have some stealing eggs. But no rats!

That's a bigger one, but yeah, wharf rats are scary. They get even bigger (all that hawser haulin'), have nastier attitudes (old salts having sailed the world) and speak several languages (world travelers again).

I swear, if I find one like that I WILL use a .38 on it. I hate killing any animal, but I won't tolerate a rat!

You know, I'd been told that several times and tried to avoid it as long as I could. But when the nasty rats killed and ate a full-sized leghorn hen I said enough is enough. I lost countless numbers of quail, chicks, bantams, and pigeons to the nasty things, and I finally decided that if the dogs were dumb enough to eat the poison then they could die too

Of course they didn't, and there is such a low amount of poison left in the poisoned rats that a risk of secondary poisoning is very small. Now we are rat-free and still have all the dogs
