My hens went broody over just one egg or even "imaginary" eggs. They go broody for all kinds of unique reasons like..... because you don't want them to, and vice versa.

It's hormones. Simple as that.

Hormones very much involved although not a seasonal variation. Broodiness can be as a function of clutch size.
