I know my whole pedigree, and I am a mutt. Some of my best friends are mutts- both four legged and two legged. Easter eggers are mixed breed chickens i.e. mutts. There's nothing derogatory about the term.
there is to me with people.. if someone called my child a mutt i would be offended. we are multicultural. i would take it as a racist commet. i see nothing wrong with it as pertaining to a chicken though
Well, my kids are real mutts. My wife is a mixture of three nationalities as am I. That gives our kids a mix of 6 nationalities. The only purebreds in this family are two beautiful little girls adopted from China. My other three grand children have two more nationalities added making them a mixture of 8 nationalities. We are all mutts. What is racist about that?
My hatchery advertised mine as Easter Eggers. I met someone who bought from the same hatchery and he called them Amerucanas. I have read that the Amerucana was a mix breed from the ones in Chile, so what is an Easter Egger breed with?
How do I know what color's they will be?
I was hoping for the Blue or Silver
thanks,
It is nice that the hatcherie advertised them as Easter Eggers. It seems to me that if people are looking for chickens that lay pretty colored eggs the term easter egger would be a lovely beacon, and the truth since they can lay a number of colors of eggs from brown, blue, green, pink, almost white.
I think of mutts in terms of dogs, people are heinz 57's ( not sure why ), other animals are mixed breeds or cross's if not pure. So maybe we could call them mixs or cross's. How about heinys (heehe).

First of all do not take offense i mean none... also i speak for only me and my family and our experiences. I will give a broad brush stroke. if you are really interested in what i think, feel free to email or what not. after personal experience i will add that this is a subject i have studied extensively. I have degrees in anthropology and psychology as well as sociology and women studies. so that mixed with my own experience is where i am coming from.
as a multicultural native american family with white, african american and native american children we get called a lot of things. including mutts. we are purebred humans period. the reason i think it is a racist comment, and do not know your nationalities so i can not speak to that, but i can speak to the fact that minorities have been "other" for as long as this country has been established. Not to long ago my children would have been considered a subspecies of human. heck i was seen as a subspecies. mutt is a term used in a derogatory manner same as the term mulatto which litterally mean subspecies of horse. purebred? we are pure humans that is our breed there is no biological race. which by definition has a connotation of less than the dominant society. this is not a time for that conversation. but you may want to be careful who you call a mutt. The people i have had conversations with that call my family names that are offensive are usually white i dont blame them, they don't know they are doing it. It is the privledge we do not have. again i am not meaning to even have this coversation but you asked i will leave this now. call your chickens and your family what you like but to others it may not be appropriate.
i can only speak for myself and my family and the issues we have faced as a multicultural family. i am not speaking of you, or for you. This is just my truth and you asked so I answered. hope all are having a good night. i am going to go put my Mutt EE chickens in for the night
Wow just to put in my two cents.
My family is a blend of many cultures. Hence we are multicultural not multi racial. There is only one race as stated by the scientists and most religions and that is the human race. Chickens can be neither multicultural (humans are the representatives of the "chicken culture" i.e. you and me, nor can they be multi species as then the offspring would be hybrids, i.e like a like a chicken duck thing (if that is possible). They can be mixed breeds or not to standard. EE are simple chickens that are bred not to standard.
Personally I think that is quite nice because I like the varieties of egg colors. However I was most annoyed that the Australorps I got last year turned out to be black sex links and the Ameraucana pullets turned out to be EE's and Roos to boot. I can'yt have roos!!!
I agree that the hatcheries should be blamed for mislabeling the chicks. I actually want EE not anything else.
I think part of the controversy, if you will, is that people new to the whole chicken thing, like myself, assume that when somebody sells them Breed X than that is what we're getting. We went to a feed store and bought an "Ameraucana" chick (I suspect she is really an Easter Egger, but what do I know?). Hope my son isn't too disappointed if his hen doesn't lay green or blue eggs! Regardless, we have a cool-looking chick even she is a little hyper.
