up until this batch i have only ever hatched ducks, so tell me if this is just a chicken thing! i candled last night, day 8. i have 8 bcm's that i am not counting in the mix because i can hardly see a thing in there. but anyways out of the rest of my eggs only 12 out of 26 have veining. of course, i will give them another week before i candle again, but still it seems like alot of clears to me. when i do ducks, i very rarely have one clear out of the whole bunch. is this normal? should i contact the sellers about it? or wait until after the next candling? temp and humidity have been right on with no problems so far.

If they are shipped eggs, shipping will do the eggs in and will cause the eggs to look clear. I buy from a well known and trusted seller all the time and I can count on the postal service between her house and mine big time for doing damage to the eggs.

yes, they were all shipped, ducks and chickens both. i guess i was just surprised because i have gotten duck eggs from two different sellers and never had this many clears. it makes sense though because i have eggs from 3 different sellers in my bator and the one seller with the most clears had the least well packed eggs. darn it all, its too bad i can't find the breeds i want locally so they don't have to ship! i was soooo looking forward to having some silkies and showgirls...

Sounds like you will get some, you said you had 12 with veins, thats good for shipped eggs and even if you get 6 to hatch thats a good start on your flock;)

i will be very sad if i only get 6.... i already have a decent flock and i had been saving my pennies to get some of the breeds i REALLY wanted yk? i spent almost $100 on all of the eggs combined. is 12 out of 32 total really a decent % for shipped eggs to develop at all? i have gotten 90-100% development in my duck eggs.... not all hatched but still they at least started. i guess i am just wondering if fertility might be playing into it as well. no way to tell really though. no development = low fertility or bad bad post office... right?

IMO---

No Development can be from=

1. low fertility
1a. late in the breeding season
1b. some breeds naturally have a lower fertility
1c. breeder birds should be moulting now
1d. SUMMER- it's hot, birds are not as active

2. Shipping
2a. shipping (even if not rough)
2b. rough shipping
2c. eggs were x-rayed

3. Egg Handling
3a. Eggs got hot before being picked up
3b. Eggs were kept to long before shipping
3c. Eggs were not packed secure

4. Incubation- to many problems can happen to even make a list! We notice that even setting our own eggs that incubation can be good in one batch and then not as good in the next; from the same birds in the same incubator.
