Why that breed???????

So i've been on BYC for while now and have noticed that alot of ppl have a preference for one breed or another and I was wondering........Think back to your first set of Chickens and all your chickens. What made you choose the breed you choose, what do you like most about that breed? what breeds do you have at your home and why?

For me I needed a hardy bird, who could do well in very cold temps during the winter months and be a great layer too. So I decided on Barred Rocks, They were all i had until last march. We've loved them, what a great breed. Then in the spring I wanted some that would be great layers......choosing Brown leghorns and then wanted a friendly breed and chose Buff Orpingtons. Tell me your stories!

The first chickens I ever got were 2 Naked Neck(Turken) Hens from a breeder. They were 12 dollars each. They have layed eggs every day since I have had them. Even through the hottest parts of the year and the coldest. I did some research and I liked that they were hardy,good layers, nice personalities, and their different looks. I guess that is the reason I chose this breed

I have orpingtons, turkens, Jersey Giants and red sex links. The sex links are for eating eggs, the orpingtons for breeding - cause they are beeee-u-teee-ful! The turkens and Jersey Giants are for my DH.

I think many folks start out with a variety of breeds, then develop a fondness for one over the other and may in the future, only have that one breed. That's what I did. I love Barred Rocks myself, as well as Ameraucanas, Buff Orpingtons and Delawares. In addition to those, I've had SLWs, GLW, Cochin, RIRs, Brahmas, Easter Eggers, Speckled Sussex, as well as BBS Orps and some crossbreeds.

When I was 4, my dad brought home 2 production red hens and 2 black Minorca hens. I named my favorite of the reds, "Reddy." I named my two black Minorcas "Blacky" and "Reeses". I don't recall the name of the other red as she died of a heat stroke later that year.

I will always have a soft spot for production reds.

As soon as I saw a picture of Sebrights, I knew I had to have some, regardless of quality. I like the other breeds I have, but Sebrights will have a special place in my heart

I liked tophats because they are unusual, I got serama because they are unusual, I go EE's because the blue eggs are unusual, I got ducks--because they were extra in a set of eggs I bought--turned out to be crested so they fit in with the rest. Got welsummers and marans because the dark eggs are unusual (are we seeing a pattern? lol). Now the cochin, the mottled, I just thought were pretty, the red was an extra and the blue and black were a trade. I could go into the others but that post would be too long.

my first chickens were EEs because of the colorful eggs but the hatchery put in 6 free australorp roosters and they were so sweet and nice that we wanted more so we got BR because they are very similar except they are striped!

RIR's for their deep warm color like cranberry/strawberry jam in January and how they "lift up their skirts" and run to me BO's for their fluffy big soft hearts and feathery selves, sunshine in the middle of winter EE's for their varied colored egg shells, muffs, beards, and passively sweet dispositions. Banty's have so much going for them, all 'round Andalusians, for their beauty, both alive and for cooking Geese, beautiful, personality plus, guardians of the block, and excellant mothers, big eggs to eat in the Spring. Ducks, entertaining, awesome egg layers, quite the conversationalists, and if you can bring yourself to it, both ducks and geese are exceptional dark meat for eating.
