Why that breed???????

I got back into chickens because my son wanted them(so did I, but if the son wanted them then it was easier to get her to agree). We did some research, and wanted heritage breeds. I grew up in Ohio, and when I saw the Buckeyes, that was our choice(I never heard of the breed when living in Ohio). We also got the Pullet Pack just to have some variety, now we have about one of everything.

Well I used to have chickens growing up. That was close to 10 years ago though. I put in a little goldfish pond and decided I wanted some ducks to go on it. I bought some black east indies and built them a pen. Then I wanted a couple small chickens to lay eggs. I wound up with polish, some generic bantams, and a cochin. I wasn't planning on showing them or anything like that

Now 2 years later I have been raising show quality bantam cochins and the ducks and others are long gone (ducks were too messy). I like the cochins so much because they are gentle, easy to manage, and most of all they are absolutely adorable especially when they run up to you (little bouncing balls of fluff)

I just recently got a couple silkies for my son so he could have 'his own' chickens these are even sweeter than the cochins, but I am not going to raise them. I cant expand any bigger than one breed (I only live on .25 acres)
Oh and at last count I have 43 cochins (and 2 silkies)!!!!!!!!!!! (and 6 more cochins in the bator)

My first chickens were a variety pack from McMurray. My favorites from the group were definitely the 2 EEs. But a few months later I visited peachick and she sold me a bantam and standard Cochin and they soon became my favorites!

I love the standard Cochins the best... so far I have a Barred, Blue, White, Buff, Partridge, Splash, Red and Golden Laced. Still need Black, Lemon-Blue and a Silver Laced pullets. The only bad part about having so many Cochins is they all go broody constantly and hog all the nesting boxes!

I got 2 Salmon Faverolles this Spring and they are super sweet birds...I really like them also. They are tied for second along with the Speckled Sussex, EEs & d'Uccles.

My Buff Orp is a sweetheart too. My Welsummers and Australorps are a bit more standoffish, but not flighty.

I originally ordered RIR as they matched the color scheme at my house! Also ordered some BRs for their looks. Both breeds have been prolific layers even through the winter. The RIRs seem to be a bit more friendly then the BRs.

Now, I have 4 mixed breeds for the colored eggs as well as the ability to easily tell each hen apart from the other. (All my RIRs and BRs are called Ms. Henny because with the exception of one (Floppsy), I can hardly tell them apart).

I also have two Ameracaunas (yes they are true ameracaunas) just because they are soo pretty and of course, those blue eggs.

i dug up this thread and wanted to reply love talking about my long 4 years with chickens and going on 2 years in show birds!!

my first chickens were a pair of white sultans me and my sister won in a raffle at the county fair and then when the rooster died we just had the hen named penny then my dad decided we need some more egg laying hens so we got NHR's RIR's and BO's and golden comets but just like one or two of each and most turned out to be roos and then i got out of poultry for like 4 years and showed registered pygmy goats but thats another story and then my friend got some ducks and being jealous i bought 8 to out do her and that is how i got my first ducks and chickens very random and very odd then when i moved and sold most of my ancona ducks i bought a trio of pilgrim geese because again a friend had them and i had to out do them i didnt like them so then i decided to actually think about my breed choices so i went out and bought some "ameraucanas" that turned out to be EE's and that is how i got my first EE hen mongoose and she is such a sweetheart and i absolutly feel in love with EE's the moment i bought her and she like snuggled with me. so then i dabbled in muscovy ducks and pekins didnt like those and then buff and khakis and then runner ducks and finally last but not least i landed on swedes and love them too!!!! then i got some BR's and WR's and another NHR from dad and they were ok still have one in with the EE's and the i got more NHR's and more BR's and then i had to cull most of them a few weeks or so ago because coryza so now im going chicken shopping this weekend to try (but probably wont fill the void of my late chickens) to replace them and im going with bantam speckled sussex, silkies, sebrights, and some sort of wyandotte afters some long research because that is what i like now!!!

so just a summary have had

Chickens: NHR, WR, BR, EE, Ameraucana, Cochins
Ducks: Swedish, Buff, Pekin, Khaki Campbells, Runners, Appleyards, Mallards, Calls, Call mixes, and Anconas
Geese: Pilgrim
never turkeys

Dad wanted Barred Rocks {idk why} they got them and picked out some odd balls mostly bannys.

I ended up with some Black Australorps, sweet and lay like crazy. I never did take to the rocks just not for me I guess. I liked the cochin bannys, all colors.
I also ended up with one golden seabright rooster and I fell in LOVE. he hated my brothers, but would ride around on my head or shoulders. the only bad thing was he thought he was a duck, cuz he was the only chick that lived, and we only had one duckling at that time. His name was Red and her name Ducky. Red would even keep an eye on ducklings.

I gave them away, but just a few weeks ago I got some RIRs, Delawares, and a Blue OEG roo
the RIRs are just chicks, but I don't think they are a must have for me. the Dels are just a little older and so friendly, and I had OEGs befor.

so my breeds are Black Australorps, Delawares, Seabrights, OEGs,
I could have Cochins, and I'm going to get Silkies
