Why were these chickens housed this way?

We have one pen that contains nothing but 18 roosters. They have an occasional brief skirmish, but nothing serious, and seem to do quite well together, having lived this way for several months now. When does the fighting start?

ETA: Of course, mine are not gamefowl. Is that why they don't fight each other?

Were they raised together or put together after they were mature? That may make a big difference. More so than the breed, I'd say.

It can be touchy, some folks get uptight about any mention of these birds, which is a real shame.

Generally they do not bring the roosters into another coop at night, they sleep in or on top of their barrels. some may find this cruel, but this breed is very hardy - a friend of mine puts straw in the bottom of his barrels and his roosters get along great even in winter- and he lives in Wisconsin!

Thanks V- so these birds are pretty predetor proof? It sounds like they can be pretty aggressive (though not always). The birds I saw weren't in a fenced in area.

all of my birds are in pens that way, a pair to a pen. Why is this? Breeding purposes.. i show so i know "Bad offspring came from this pair. their now pets. no longer used for breeding" that way then i dont have to pluck out every hen of 10 just to see which one is bad for breeding then find out its the rooster

No, these birds do not get brought in at night...no kisses either...no heat lamp...no down pillows and no back massages... These are game birds..not your production flock that all comingle in happy chicken love land

These birds will kill eachother at first opportunity and if you sleep in a minute too soon you will find one very bloody coop in the morning. They are fine in their little barrell houses, everyone. Again, these are game fowl...they sleep in trees...in the middle of winter if you let them. A barrell is a lot more protective from the elements than a tree. These breeds are notorious for their cold hardiness.

You see crows outside in the winter. Do they live in a coop?

Not all of this type of housing is specifically for games. In my case I've always got a couple of dozen cocks that I would like to mate to this or that group or hen someday. This is the most economical way to keep them in case I want to use them. I will say one thing in favor of the OEG breeders. They really know how to take care of their birds. For the best in medications and supplements they have it. There are still two Magazines published specifically for Gamecocks. Check out their advertisers for the best supplies.

The OEG will start fighting at a few weeks, but when they get to a few month old they will fight longer sometime until one is dead.

These rooster are aggression only toward other roosters. Most are very gentle with people.

Around here the yard were the barrels are fence with electric fence.

my BIL raises game fighting cocks....he puts them out on tie cords then when they get ready to fight they go in a fly pen and fed high nitrogen feed so they get aggressive....they grow very large spurs and will hurt you...they attach razor spurs on thier legs....it is really inhumane I think....but other than the fighting they take really good care of thier chickens....

Oh, my. I just dont quite know what to say to that.

It's sort of like saying, "Yeah, they abuse their children on occasion, but they are really good parents."

Ya think?

I know you are a new member, but we do not allow any mention of that here. It's entirely against forum rules.
