We took out the divider between two nest boxes in our new silkie coop. Who needs four nest boxes for three silkies anyway? So what do they do? All cram into the same small one to go to sleep! Tomorrow I am going to close the small boxes with boards and see if they use the middle one. Once they get used to it I'll remove the boards. Don't they know they aren't done growing yet?

Its a chicken thing. They all do it with open nests like you use.

If you curtain the fronts to darken them or use communal nests, crowding is less of a problem.
That, in turn, minimizes in-nest egg breakage, which goes a long way to keeping egg eating out of your flock.

Nobody outta' that group is laying an egg. They were in bed for the night when I opened the door and snapped the pic!

They are sooo cute. We changed our 3 nests into one communal. It's working great. No more broken eggs. But if your girls are just having a sleep-over that what's the harm!!!
