Why, why, why? Update! Page 3!

I always tell people that they don't need many nestboxes because no matter how many you have the girls are always fighting over 1 nestbox.
funny, thanks for showing my point of view

Well, of course. Don't you know that the hens that lay together, stay together?

Well right now they only stay together. If all the mean spirited experts on the Gender forum are right (you know who you are)

they may NEVER lay together!

Once, I had a broody hen sitting on eggs in a cat litter bucket. A few nests down, I had a broody hatch out 6 chicks, who were promptly adopted by 2 more broody hens (All of these broodies were Silkies), so I had 3 hens raising 6 chicks.

I went down one night to candle eggs on the broody in the bucket and what did I find???? All THREE of the broody moms and all 6 of their chicks had moved into the nesting broody's cat litter bucket to sleep! So I had 4 Silkie hens, 6 chicks and 8 eggs in a 10x10x12" bucket.

After that, I moved the poor nesting broody's bucket to a dog crate to give her some peace! But the other 3 hens and all the chicks continued to pile into one nest until the chicks got too big.

Silkies are the funniest little birds

They have never roosted so I left the roost out of this coop. I might add one and close off the nest boxes completely and see if they use it. They never would in their old coop and it just got in my way.

that's funny! - I love how they all want to stay close together.

can't wait til my chicks come out of the brooder and into the coop - sounds like it's another adventure learning about chicken behavior.
