Why worm twice? (1st dose, then 10 days later)

Just curious, but why is it recommended to worm again after ten days? Is that standard for all types of wormers or just Safe-Guard?

Also, I wormed my flock last Friday with Safe-Guard. Should I worm them again after 10 days with the same wormer or should I switch to something else?

The second dose is to clear out anything that hatched since the first dose since wormers do not kill the eggs or encysted parasites. So without a second dose you are very quickly right back where you started. If you have dewormed with Safeguard you can also use that for your second dose or you can use something else like Valbazen. Doesn't matter a whole lot as long as it's something effective against poultry parasites. If you are keeping your birds on a regular deworming schedule then it's a good idea to rotate between wormers. I rotate between Safeguard and Valbazen and deworm 2 to 3 times a year.

Thanks! I didn't realize the wormer didn't get the eggs as well. I have one sick chick and I took a look at her poo under the microscope (gross, I know) and was pretty sure I saw roundworm eggs, which is why I wormed them to begin with.

I definitely plan to worm them on a regular basis, 2-3 times a year like you do. After what I saw on the microscope slide I'm convinced they need it!

Do you know where I can get Valbazen? I looked online at TSC and they only had wazine & ivermectin. Wazine only does roundworms, is that correct? And I don't know if ivermectin can be given to chickens?

Amazon only had one supplier listed for Valbazen and it was $75.95 for 1 quart. Is it always that expensive? Or is there somewhere else to get it for a reasonable price?

Thank you for your help!

Try Jeffer's Livestock Supply, I think that's the name, they are on-line and might have it cheaper.

You are correct that Wazine will only get roundworms. Ivermectin products have become very ineffective as wormers for chickens due to their overuse as a miticide.

I have seen roundworms in my chickens poop and did a fecal today that I found cecal worms in. I dewormed with Wazine 5 days ago. Does anyone know if I have to wait the 14 days before using safeguard? I have a hen that hasn't been acting right for about a week, and I saw the roundworms in her poop 5 days ago when I treated with wazine. At first I thought she was being broody, but she will get off the eggs if put under her and move to an empty nesting box. I'm a little worried about her and hate to wait the 14 days to treat again.

I've only had chickens a little over a year and had no idea they needed to be routinely dewormed!

Unfortunately wazine wont get rid of cecal worms. Wazine acts like a "flush" with large roundworms. I'd go ahead and dose them now with either safeguard or valbazen, then redose again in 10 days using one wormer or the other.
