Sorry to be posting yet again about my lovely Edith. She has been discharged from the vets today for over night care at home as our vets are not open 24/7.

She’s been on IV fluids, antibiotics and anti inflammatory injections. There is some improvement as she has her eyes open and has nibbled on a tiny bit of food. She’s had an x ray and also an abdominal ultrasound, it’s shown a tiny amount of free fluid but not enough to be drained and also a large liver. The vet has diagnosed EYP and has said she has severe inflammation and also most likely fatty liver which is apparently common in ex batteries.

She keeps standing like she is in the photo and sinking down she can’t seem to keep her wings against her body does anybody know why this is . I’m not going to let her suffer. Today is her first proper day of treatment and she is back at the vets tommrow , if she has not improved by the morning I feel it may be kinder to have her put to sleep. I’m currently giving her water with critical care formula. However I’m not sure how long it takes for anti inflammatory and antibiotics to kick in. I’m not sure what to do, I don’t want to keep her going if she is struggling but also don’t know how long I should give for the medicines to work.

The stance is that of a bird growing weaker. What chances did the vet give her of a recovery? Sorry.
Oh no yesterday she couldn’t stand at all so I was hoping it was some improvement 😥 the vet hasn’t said she said she’s a very sick bird but if we can reduce the inflammation she can recover but I think it there is no improvement by the morning then I’ll have the difficult decision to make

Well if she wasnt able to stand yesterday and she is like that now it means she weak but she is at least tempting to be better which does show improvement

She has not given up in herself and you should not give up on her..praying for you
Thank you so much. I just don’t want her to suffer but at the same time can’t even bear the thought of loosing her 😢 just praying her little body can fight the infection and inflammation

Looks like she has a reproductive issue. Unfortunately, I agree with putting her out of misery. I know it's hard, but sometimes you got to do what you got to do.

That's not the point of mercy-killing. Its not about giving up on her, she is in pain and sometimes its about letting go.

I would agree that she is most likely suffering from internal laying or egg yolk peritonitis. There are some photos online of hens who are standing more upright like that. Ascites or fluid in the belly can be common with those and also cancer or fatty liver. Most times a necropsy is when you typically find out what exactly the problem was. I would love up on her and think about euthanizing her soon. I have learned a lot doing necropsies on my hens who have died. Sorry about your hen.

Yes I understand that but the bird is still trying to stand after not therefore she the bird is not giving up I dont kill them till they put no more effort into getting better this bird seems to be trying is what I am saying
