Why would people...

A girl I work with her children got chicks for Easter from an aunt. after they got big she didnt know what to do with them. At the time she was off on medical leave had surgury. to make a long story short she didnt know I was raising chickens she would have gave them to me. They dumped them out by their church. I was very upset. Went out there but all were gone either food or hopefully someone picked them up. So that can be a reason. People who buy chick and duckings at Easter dont have a clue what to do when they are not babies anymore. I think that chicks/ducks should not be sold for Easter gifts.

If people take on the responsibility to raise animals they should fulfil there obligation to provide for the animals. Simply giving the animal away are dumping the animal is cruel in my mind.

I may be there--Right now I have way too many birds for my needs and may be selling off some of my BSL this month. I just don't want to carry that many over the winter--rather have 30 than 45.

Maybe they're more aggressive than they like. They do come from barred rocks, and imo are the most aggressive hens out there.

And before somebody goes jumping in here with ruffled feathers. I own both, and game birds.

Giving the animal away is not cruel. Dumping them off is. When you give an animal away, you at least know it will be cared for.

That does sound like an oxymoron doesn't it!

some feed stores sell laying hens - usually like 12 bucks around here... not a lot of em, but some... might not be the case though. haha, i can only imagine how many chickens id have at home if i owned a feed store! wow, think of that.....

Well, I have two Black Stars that produce an incredible amount of noise and not much else yet (they're 24 weeks and laying, but not regularly). They are definitely characters, to say the least. I love them to death but often threaten to trade them in for some more Easter Eggers.

Glad to hear the girls found a good home and sorry their owner couldn't keep them for whatever reason. I know I'd be heartbroken if I had to give up any of my chickens.
