Why would someone remove drywall from inside a closet?

I was just cleaning out a closet and found that someone had removed part of the drywall inside the closet. There's about an inch removed from the sides above the uppermost shelf, and a 3" section lengthwise removed from the top. Those sections are open to the interior house frame.

I'm trying to figure out WHY someone would remove that. Any ideas?

What rooms are on the other side? They may've used the wall in the closet to access plumbing or electrical for the adjacent room without damaging the walls in that room. . ? The other options are far more cynical and just prove I watch way too many crime dramas

A bedroom. I don't think there's any plumbing or electric in that wall. There's no outlet and the bathroom and kitchen are on the other side of the house.

Those shelves are built in and it's impossible to get in there to do anything. The removal wasn't very neatly done, it's pretty jagged, probably because they had to lean in backwards with that top shelf digging into their back the whole time they were working.

It's going to be devilishly difficult to replace. I think I'm going to use wood filler for the 1" sides and drywall for the top 3" gap.

I think @redinator is on the right track. We had to remove the Sheetrock in a guest room closet to repair the shower next door. That being said, we put it BACK when we were done!
Yeah, whoever did this and didn't finish the job, I want to kick them in the shins. 😠 This is going to be a PITA to repair.

They probably needed a bigger piece but didn't want to spend the money/energy to do it properly. After all, it's only a closet, right? Who's gonna see it ? :he
