hello everyone, Im fairly new to this wonderful chicken/rooster world. I have a small rooster that was recently gifted to me along with its little chicken friend, I say little because the other 3 chicken that i have are Reds and are significantly larger than the new pair, and they all get along well. All the chickens are laying eggs and the rooster seems very happy. However for the last 3 days he has been making some weird noise. Its not his usual crow, its kind of like a crying noise "caa, caa, caa" , at first i thought it was one of the chickens, maybe laying an egg, but when i went to go see what the noise was it was the rooster. He drops his wings down and looks like he's poised for crowing but its just this weird cry (for lack of a better word). It usually last for 5 minutes an it happens throughout the day. Has anyone had this happen or know what it could possibly mean?

My rooster makes the same sound as the chickens when she lays an egg...he does this with her. In fact, since I've had my rooster he seem to 'sing this song' more than the hens do.

Could it be that your guy is announcing the laying of an egg?

Thank u, u could be right. I just thought it was odd since it really wasn't his normal crowing and he just started 3 days ago. He's been here with us for about 3 weeks now. So maybe since he's feeling comfortable now he's back to his regular behavior.
