Wife jumped the gun

As long as the chick stays warm, there was no blood and it is fluffing out, those are good signs. Good luck... I hope it makes it. Your wife's heart was in the right place.

Agreed, if the yolk sac was absorbed completely, and he didn't have a bunch of blood vessels in the membrane surrounding the egg, then he was probably pretty close to zipping on his own... and tho some say keep him alone, other chicks might stimulate him to move around more. maybe put him in a small bowl in the brooder with the other chicks, where they can't climb all over him but he can hear them doing their thing. sound is important IMO, as it's the first thing they know. the sound of their hatch-mates learning to breathe, talking to each other, and when incubated normally (under a broody) momma is talking to them too. so separating him may not be the best thing, unless he had yolk sac still out, lost too much blood, or something like that.

I think that he will make it...I had to help 2 out because they were shrink wrapped...they were really tired and kind of listless, I kept them in a separate box with a lamp on them....so that the other chicks wouldn't pick on them and so that they could rest....the next day they were great....just keep him warm and let him get all of the rest that he needs and he should be stronger tomorrow....mine were bantams so they were really small....Good Luck!!!!

I'll snap some pictures once he's dry and fluffy. He's too pooped to pose for pictures yet.

Glad the baby appears to be okay! It won't really "need" food immediately, because it is still being nourished by the yolk it just absorbed.
