Anxiously waiting to hear the outcome. I sure hope you were successful but don't be hard on yourself if you weren't. Catching those little things amongst grass and weeds without the benefit of a mother calling to them would be quite difficult.
I went back out there with my friends. I had on my boots and a good jacket and proceeded to search under every shrub and under any long grass clumps for 1/4 mile in either direction, on both sides of the drainage ditch for 1 1/2 hours in the rain. No luck at all
.
If they had gone across the frontage road, there's no chance of finding them. There's a river on the other side of the road through some of the most dense thicket of brambles. We could see lots of critter tunnels leading towards the river, but that thicket is like a 20 ft wide and 15 ft tall wall. I'll try again after work. If any survived the cold night and hail storm this morning, maybe they'll be too exhausted to run away?

How does someone hit a family of ducks on a 4-lane (w/median) highway? They were in the slow lane..Just freakin' slow down and go around
!
Thanks for the ideas. I didn't get to read the suggestions about a female duck till I got back to work today (no computer @ home). That's a good one.
You did everything you could to help them. Sometimes, somethings are just not meant to be. Sorry it wasnt the outcome we all wanted, but you did your best and that is what counts. GOOD JOB there are many that wouldnt of even cared and you showed you are more humane than the jerk who hit the momma duck. I dont know you but am proud there are still people like you and your friends around to try to help the helpless.
All I could think of was those tiny babies with obviously no hope of survival. Guess that's the mom in me. I always see myself in an animal's situation, and hope that, being a human, capable of empathy, I can do something to affect a happier outcome...
Thanks for all your support!
