Wild bird seed

Is it ok to feed the chickens wild bird seed as a treat?
I have seen big bags of the stuff...the cheap kind, and wondered if it would be ok?

I have given the cheap birdseed to my hens. They like it as a treat and seem fine with it.

I use it as scratch. It's so cheap and the local grocery stores sell it cheaper than the feed stores. Because I have bantams as well as standard hens, I get the type that has the small sunflower seeds so the little guys can swallow them. Some bagged seed even has calcium carbonate added to strengthen birds' eggshells. Good for my chickens too.
