I have been out of town for a week and have had a pet sitter. This evening I noticed that the chicken water bowl was full of poop from the wild birds that sit on the top of the shed. I'm sure some problem will stem from this, what should I do right off the bat?

Get a bottle of Corid and a bottle of wormer and be ready to treat accordingly.

Move the waterer? Get a nipple waterer? Make a poop shield over the waterer?

How is your coop/run set up?
Any way you can move the water station under cover so it's not in direct line of getting poop in it?

I have the same problem with starlings that are the most agressive and nasty birds. They even take baths in my waterers! I dislike washing out chicken waterers, and have preferred using open pans or rubber bowls for a few years. But the usual gallon or 3-5 gallon plastic or metal waterers are your best bet to keep birds from pooping in them. You could also gradually change to nipple or cup waterers, but those are a challenge in freezing weather, and I like to change my water daily.

This winter, inside my coop I use the 1.5 gallon electric dog waterers, and have been considering making a cover with an open spot for drinking. I just haven’t done it yet, and the starlings are not around right now.
