Hello from East Tx. We have feral hogs hogs here as well, and having my dog getting mixed up with one is one of my biggest fears.
First bit of advice, get a bigger gun. First one a trapped I shot between the eyes at 10 feet with a 9mm with BAD results. After about 5 minutes of the pig charging the cage to get to me I was able to get a shot behind the ear to finish the job. That was just a small 100# female.
If you don't want to buy a trap you can put some corn on a piece of roofing tin at night, when you hear the rattling turn on the spot light and take your shot.
If you're lucky kill one or more it is some the the best eating meats. However, the big old boars are not so good to eat and best used as dog food or left for the coyotes and vultures.
This next idea comes from some of the old-timers I know and never have tried first hand. After you have killed and dressed one, take all the parts not fit for the BBQ or dog food (our dog gets all the scraps, liver, heart, lungs etc chopped and boiled) and put it in a burlap sack, then drag it around the area you want to keep the pigs out. Supposedly they will not cross the oder of pig blood (death).
Hope this helps.
