Wild Turkeys 911

Dude, get me those lottery numbers!
they could have been in the persons garage, or barn!
no other info was given.
and yes, i find it oppressive. If i found a few wild turkeys, possibly abandoned in my yard, i would not want to be in fear of calling a game warden.
but look what else the great state of illinois has given us!
look into your crystal ball again and tell me what state they are in.

If someone finds a wild animal they should most likely leave it alone as most animals aren't in need of rescuing when the 'finders' think they do. If there are obvious signs of distress or injury then yes, it needs a rescue.

First thing to do would be to call your local game wardens office. They should be able to advise you on what to do and come out and look at the animal as well. Now, there are always the 'hot head' game wardens but they should not come threaten anyone or lock anyone up or fine anyone for just trying to help. Some just dont realize that you should leave most wild animals where they are. Their moms are usually just out of sight but there. A good game warden will explain all of this to the 'finder' and let them know all info possible on finding wild animals. They do take wild turkey very seriously around here. Mostly at hunting time though. Wild turkey are very looked after around these parts and most others I am sure but no one needs to be hounded by just trying to help an animal. If you encounter a game warden like this...report him. No one should be scared to call up their game wardens for help with wild animals.....that is their job...to help...not scare..

I get alot of baby owls that people think need rescuing. When baby owls leave the nest they hop around on the forest floor for a long time. They can't fly perfect and they just hang out from limb to stump to limp to tree and so on playing and looking for food. Their parents will follow them for miles and miles to feed them. People think they have found an orphaned owl when in fact he is just fine and needs to be left alone.

I hope the OP posts again on this matter.....Don't scare him off thinking he will go to jail for just trying to help.......

i think the person who posted has little experience with animals. But that is just speculation, because that is all we can do, speculate. the poster never gave much info. i could deduce this person has little experience with animals, wild or otherwise. that being said, they should call a warden first thing, unless of course, you live in illinois...then 'the man' come beat down your door, scare your kids, and write you a hefty ticket for touching the states wildlife.
In california, turkeys are feral, invasive, implants, non-native. it all depends who you ask. we have season to hunt them...but the ones on the hill behind my house are all feral, or allowed to graze where ever, just better not be near my pasture during hunting season!
the person who posted this has moved on.

Now somebody from Cal calling the state of Illinois oppressive is really hilarious but you are right. Everybody has to shoo wild turkeys out of their pole barns almost everyday. Yeah no way these poults were picked up in the wild where they happen to live.

thanks, i will let you know how i do with those lottery numbers.
and i n california, turkeyss do need to be shoo'd off peoples proeprty in some parts of the state. heck, i know guys in the southern portion of our county who call them with weed whackers.
they are not native.
In my portion of the state, we pretty much do as we please, not much influence from the big city, and our game wardens are tough as nails. because we have been bestowed wth much natural abundance that has since been suffering the tragedy of the commons. Abalone, Salmon, Water fowl, i could go on. i also know that some people just dont have much experience...and my friuend who is a game warden, upon getting a call about some possibly abandoned turkeys, would not issue a citation. maybe because they know turkeys are invasive in this area, and wuite damaging to native fauna and wild life. or maybe because the person is ignorant, or unaware. the author of the post could have been a 12 year old girl...we just dont know.
