Wildfire evacuation

I've had to evacuate twice due to hurricanes. It's not a fun task. First priority is human life safety. People are always first. Second is your irreplaceable documents (mortgage, financial, INSURANCE, medical etc) Third is items you will need to survive after the fact that are necessary ( think- if I come back and everything is gone) After those, then if there's time and ability take care of the rest. Honestly your best option may be to open the coop door on the way out. I truly wish you the best in this.

In a pinch, I considered putting mine in a moving box, with air holes, or just throwing all the pets in the back of the Explorer and driving like the wind!

I *think* I've heard of the county fairgrounds taking livestock in times of emergency.

Be safe. I hope the fires spare everyone there, and the In-n-Out burger in Redding. That was our closest one, before they built the one in Medford, OR (which I still haven't tried). :)

Pack some clothes, your medications, your computer, insurance paperwork. Take dog food and chicken food for only a couple of days, water for you. Don't worry about the rest. If you do not have one I suggest you do obtain a trailer for future evacuation or use. Call 530-225-2510 for information. There are animal rescue organizations to help with the dogs and chickens. There are centers set up for you to go to. I had to evacuate 3 times last year because of fire, so I understand. Be Safe, things can be replaced, but life is precious. I'm praying for you! Please keep us posted here on what's happening. :hugs

Contact the 4H department in your area or in the area outside the evacuation area.
We lived in Colorado, and were evacuated for wildfires around five years ago. We did not have chickens at the time, and were lucky that our neighborhood survived, but one of our friends lost their home. Their livestock (horses, chickens, goats) were farmed out to volunteers through the 4H groups in the area. They had a list of people willing to provide temporary housing for livestock.

I loved reading this!!

Here's my Twitter account where I'm writing about the fire a bit:

It helps interacting with people during a crisis like this. But what I'm now thinking about the most is the frozen ice block with a chicken inside!!!!!!! Oh, my goodness. Are you serious? Was it like an actual formation of ice, similar to an ice cube, and a chicken came back to life once thawed out? That's nuts and so cute and funny!!

Frogs in Alaska freeze solid during winter. A friend told me kids pass them around in class at school. Unbelievable!!!!

Yup.it really happened.

Hang in there.

You are in our thoughts.. The smoke is flowing up into Idaho where I live and the sky is grey.

Your best bet is throw em in a carrier, cage or box and bail out. Food and water containers if you can, if you can't, you can improvise later. A chicken will eat a sandwich or a can of cat food from a gas station if you've got to.
Yes, there are two fires in Idaho right now. Neither are close to my family, and I wish there weren't any close to you either. I hope you can get through this with hopefully all of your chickens and no damage to your house. I will be praying for you! Just remember God is in control, and don't loose hope. I wish you the best of luck!:fl:hugs
