They can without any real trouble. Just like a short tail weasel which is a lot smaller than those dogs.

Oh I don't doubt they could pull it off if they snuck up on the cluck at night and had a quick shot at them, much like your typical mustilid, but I'm thinking of the more common daytime backyard interaction where both hen and dog are paying attention and chickie can run and/or turn and flog the snot out of the little guy. A dog that wants to and knows how to kill (like your weasel) isn't going to have much trouble, but a dog who doesn't really know the tricks and kinda just wants to play with that feathery flappy thing may end up with his clock cleaned.

The only chickens I have ever lost to a domestic dog were to my neighbors Chihuahua.......got 3 before I could get out there and was pulling feathers out of the butt of one of my turkeys that had tried to run and got stuck between 2 trees. They placed the dog elsewhere after it struck 2 more times.

The main problem I've seen with most people who own chihuauas is they don't treat them like dogs capable of doing dog things. Chihauaus are the first little things I've seen hop into a fight with a dingo. They have NO idea they're chihuauas. A dog thinks it's a dog. A dog does not think, "Does my breed of dog do this?" A dog thinks, "OH PRETTY FEATHERS."

And frankly, chickens have dodgy hearts.

I have 2 Chihuahuas. They were very interested in the chickens when they were chicks. My alpha female would drool and stick her head in the brooder box but I taught her that that was a no-no. She and my male lost interest in them when they got as big as them and started to chase them in the kitchen. Now, their chief job is to try to get more treats than the chickens when it is treat time. They walk cautiously around the pen and search for bread or what ever else might not have gotten in the chickens pen. They sit with us outside in the summer when we are watching Chicken TV. I would say it would be an individual thing. Not all dogs are the same. My dogs were around the chicks (they lived in my kitchen) until they went outside so they really don't think they are something to attack.

As you can see I have two vicious beasts...

So far the larger of the two just looks really interested in tasing them a little, but has not chased or hurt any of the birds. He is good at helping me herd them into the coop though.

I have smaller dogs too and the smallest of the two pekingese dogs seems to salivate the most when I'm holding a chicken. She stands up on her back legs as if reaching for a taste. I agree small dogs think they are big and have big appetites. Better safe than sorry. Instincts of the wolves.

It really does depend upon the dog, but in most cases, Yes, a chihuahua has the ability to kill a chicken. Despite their small size, they can inflict a LOT of damage if they want to. A buddy of mine was attacked by a chihuahua, and he ended up getting a some stitches for it. if they can do that to a person, there is no doubt in my mind that a determined chihuahua could kill a chicken.

Yes, a Chihuahua can kill a chicken.
See the white object in this picture with my Princess Sweet Pea?
That's a GORILLA, a DEAD gorilla.
If she can kill gorillas, I'm quite sure a chicken will pose no problem.
