Will a chihuahua kill a chicken?

Get them a chicken window! My chi was very interested in the chicks, but after much socializing, they all get along just fine. Any dog needs to be socialized to a new creature. They all run around together in the backyard without issue. This pic is a couple of years old.

The cat wanted to kill them for quite a long time, but eventually they got big enough to become his best friends.

The thing you've got to understand about chihuahuas is that they don't realize they're small dogs*. They have all the same instincts as a big dog and since they think they weight 130 pounds and are 3' at the shoulder, they're going to act as if they were!

Now, whether they could PHYSICALLY kill a chicken is going to be up for grabs. It'd take a determined dog, a dumb chicken, and a lot of luck.

That said a chihuahua could still do some damage even if it didn't kill. Separate and/or do some heavy duty training, same as any other dog, and you won't be sorry.

[/quote I'm a Deputy in a rural county and come in contact with all kinds of dogs, been bit a few times. The only dog to every draw blood was a chihuahua mean lil sob. Give me a pitbull or rottwieller any day at least I can see them coming. Lol it all goes back to how the animal is raised, any dog is capable of killing chickens just like any dog is capable of biting humans just depends on its training or lack of rather

I realize this is an old thread, but I lost my favorite chick last week to my chihuahua. The chick was in the habit of flying to me when I would open the brooder cage door. I usually made sure there were no dogs in the room (I have four dogs), but Brisa the chi was underfoot this one time, and when the chick missed my shoulder and fell to the ground, my chi got her and would not let go. The chick died in a matter of seconds, but I was and still am, sick about it. So anything's possible. (((

ive never seen this happen but i have heard it can, it could be one of 3 things, even though your dog is small and cute it does still have instincts that tell it chicken is food.
another option is it got a little over excited and with something like a chicken and a dog even as small as a chihuahua it really wouldnt take much for a accedent to happen.
and the last is chihuahuas are very prone to be very jealous and may have killed it if it had even a glimer of a thought that the chicken may replace it as your "favourite".

Thanks, mouseman. All of those sound reasonable. I have surely learned my lesson about letting the dogs near my chickens.

Yes they will kill a chicken no question about it. I had three chickens at one time until my 4 pounder killed them. They run the chicken, get behind it, then jump on the chickens back. Then grab the chickens head for the kill.
