Will a clipped beak grow back

I just came across this thread looking for some help/info on our new girl Greta. We are new at chickens and felt so sorry for her that we had to get her. It's horrendous to me. It's hard for her to peck anything off of the ground. And same as you...I found it easier for her to eat out of a deep full dish. I see that the bottom beak gets compacted with dirt and little pebbles. Anyone seen a beak done as bad as hers?

Her beak clip is very sad, however it is not one of the worst ones I've seen! The lower mandible is quite overgrown (likely because it's hard for her to keep it neat with her upper mandible so clipped), giving the impression that the upper one is shorter than it is. If you have a vet in the area or even someone that does falconry that knows how to cope (trim) bird beaks, you might ask if they can help you. She needs some beneficial trimming to her lower beak, from what I can tell. That should help her a bit. She looks quite healthy and bright eyed!

Listen to Nambroth - she knows what she is talking about! Your hen does indeed look healthy and bright eyed, so do as much as you can to keep her this way. Beak clipping is an awful thing, but if you can at least get the lower one a bit shorter it may help her in the long run. Good luck to you all, and big ups to you for wanting to help a chicken that has suffered in the past!

Thanks for the advice. We have had her and 4 others about 2 1/2 weeks now. We have yet to get an egg from her. Really not even sure of her age or anything. I seen that beak and it won my heart. I had to have her! We got all of them from a Bird Swap not far from where we live.

I have 12 ex battery hens, and their beaks are very bad. Some are fine, but one girl has very little beak at all. I have a deep dish for them all, and the cope. One girl's top beak (I don't do technical terms) Curls down, and one girl is much like DragenFlyPixxy's. What people do to animals......

I bought pullets and their beaks were already clipped. they do it when they are 8 days old. mine are all day long in the run and they manage to peck but not like the others. one of them has very short beak and she is my sweetest girl. she sings almost all the time, seems very happy. but I would chop hands to the people who do this to the poor chicks!

I have a comet that was clipped as a baby. Often times they cauterize the beak with a special clipping tool so it does not grow back. My girl is a year old and its never grown out.

It sounds like whoever did it was an idiot and clipped both top and bottom. Maybe offer her a mash or crumbles. It might be easier for her. My girl does pretty well, though her bottom is normal length, the top is very short, right up to her nostrils. Since she cant get scratch as easy on the ground, i put some in the feeder for her and she is able to get to it.

Hi, Reurra!

I was wondering what happened with your chicken with the missing top beak? It's now August, 2016. I've just had a terrible accident with a Polish Pullet born earlier this year. Somehow, she managed to get to a rat trap that I had put up out of the way, ready for the evening. Unfortunately, she managed to get to it. I had used cheese which they all love and she probably smelt it. Yes. She got her top beak caught in it. I must've found it just after it had occurred as when I found the plastic rat trap on the ground with what I thought, at first, contained a dog nail. After checking the dogs, no, not them. Then, I saw her standing nearby. Yep! Poor Adora! Right up to her nose! Snapped right off! It was still bleeding. That was how I knew that it had just happened. Swabbed it with Betadine and held it there until it stopped bleeding. Gave her some Rescue Remedy. 1/4 tablet of Panadol. Now, I'm trying to find out whether there's a chance the top beak will grow back. I found one source say it took a year for their chicken to grow her beak back. Another say, that as long as it isn't cauterised, it should grow back. Was yours cauterised?

I'm hoping that she stands a chance for recovery a) She's very healthy; b) Adora's still under a year old (10 mths, I think. I'll have to check.); c) I haven't cauterised the wound. d) I'm mainly at home nowadays so I can handfeed and syringe her water especially whilst it the area is so tender. Poor thing, Adora didn't even complain whilst I tendered her wound. She knew that I was trying to help. I think she was just standing there in shock when I found her.

I'm so very cross with myself for leaving it out in the first place! I should've put it away completely. In a cupboard or something!

Anyway, I'd be interested to hear what happened to your Hen, please?

Best wishes,
ChickyChooky

Dont cauterize the wound. Let it heal on its own Its like a fingernail when its broken off or torn off. Just keep it clean, offer her lots of easy to eat foods. Make sure the other birds dont try to peck at her too. She should be fine.

My girls were cauterized, doing that does irreparable damage to the cells and the root structure and it will never grow back. Though they had no upper beak, my girls did really well and were just fine.

Your girl is just wounded, she will recover. Her beak might grow crooked, you may need to keep a close eye on it and may need to offer her sand paper roosts so she can scrape it into shape.

If she is perky and active, she should be fine.

HI, Reurra!

Thank you for your advice. I decided to hand feed Adora twice a day for two weeks. Then, one morning, I picked her up to feed her and found that she had a full crop! Wonderful! At first, I couldn't work out how she was doing it, but so glad that she had worked out a way! Then, I realised. Getting water is easy, of course! She actually digs deep into the feeders with her beak thus being able to peck the grains up! So, when it comes to treat time, I just pick her up and drop the treats into her open bottom beak so she doesn't miss out. e.g. cheese, meal worms and maggots. Other than that, I haven't had to hand feed her since! Adora seems very healthy and appears to be doing very well. Relief!

I think there might be some slight growth on her beak but I'm probably just being hopeful! We shall see!

Thanks again, Reurra!

ChickyChooky :)
