Quick question....just found my white peahen sitting on a single egg under a tree in my backyard...problem is the sprinkler has come on and the egg has a small puddle of water around it...do wet eggs hatch?...she's still sitting on it ? Thanks for any reply

The water will dissolve the protective coating on the egg. The chick may still develop but it will be vulnerable to bacteria which could kill or infect it. Knowing myself, I would probably let her set but it would be best to take the egg and let her start over in a drier place. :old

Thanks for the reply...I'm like you :) I will probably let her set for awhile longer...She's one of my favorites ...so I hate to take the egg...and I've turned off the sprinkler to the tree

One of my special free-ranging hens set a nest in what I thought would be a very protected place, until a gully washer came through and flooded everything. I went out and found her four eggs submerged and her standing over them. I quickly found some hay and elevated her nest out of the water and she went back to setting. Two days later she abandoned the nest. I think being chilled killed the embryos and she knew it.

Depends on how wet. I have pulled eggs out of snow and had them hatch. A fully submerged nest is typically not going to hatch but just getting wet is not a big problem unless they get wet and then the temperature drops.
