Our hen just started laying and the first 5 were small (she is a silkie) but today her egg was much larger. Why?

Pullet eggs are usually small. They get bigger as the hen gets her girl parts fine tuned. :). And some times hens will lay one abnormally large or small egg. I got a 'fart' egg from one of my EE's a while back; it was the size of a penny!

What is a fart egg? I have heard that term before. The first 5 eggs are the small ones, they were her very first eggs...we are going to incubate them ...will this effect the chicks health? They are fertile because our rooster has been mating with her.

Pullet eggs can be incubated with success. The chicks will be initally smaller but will grow to a normal size. It just may take a few weeks to catch up.

I am on my iPad so I have issues loading pictures, but if you go into my profile and scroll to the bottom, I have an 'embedded picture' of the fart egg between one of her regular eggs and a quarter.
