Will a newly crowing rooster get LOUDER as he matures?

Yes, they get louder. It's funny, but one of my Cochin's just started crowing the other day. When he did, the rest of the flock, not hearing that before, got kind of freaked out and ran into the barn. Well, that freaks him out and he runs in too. Kind of like being scared of his own shadow.

I had to rehome mine because of the noise. If it was once or twice a day we could deal with it. Mine crowed all day long so we found him a home with some other BYC folks that live FAR out in the country. No neighbor said a word but I feel it was just a matter of time. Good luck, John

Well, it's been about 5 weeks since he started crowing... and like all of you said, he has gotten louder... but it's ok so far! No neighbors have complained. Those neighbors have a little dog that barks sometimes, and previous neighbor on the other side had 3 to 4 dogs living outside who barked all night long sometimes... so I feel like my roo isn't NEAR the nuisance that was! At least he is crowing when the sun comes up and not ALL night long...ugh. (those neighbors moved a couple of months ago and took the barking dogs).

Because of all that, I haven't asked the neighbors if my roo bothers them, but I am thinking that at least on weekends it would be worthwhile figuring something out just to be kind and let everyone sleep in late including us!

I like the idea (as someone suggested about tricking the roo with darkness) as I have just acquired a dog house that I've got plans to adapt for a hen house with nest box, and maybe that will work! I love the fellow and really want to keep him and will do whatever is necessary to make it work. We live in a rural neighborhood and chickens aren't unusual, but I'm the only one in our near vicinity currently with a rooster.

But so far... things are fine! I cover my head with a pillow after his 6:30am wake up calls... but mostly I just go ahead and get up...

He is also become kind of fiesty in the am... he jumps out and starts kicking up the dirt really crazy aggressive like... hormones have definately kicked in, but he is still a nice guy (he's never come at me aggressively) and let's me pet him as much as I want in the evening at his bed time and happily eats out of my hand anytime

He is so awesome that I'd love to have a hen like him... another Black Australorpe.

Thanks for the input everyone!

Sounds good! But I'd still talk to the neighbors, as unfortunately, as odd as it seems, the idea of a chicken doesn't go over nearly as well as a pack of night long howling dogs.

you are lucky if the rooster only crows at 6:30 a.m.

My dh gets up before 5 a.m. and they have already been crowing...does not matter that it is not light outside! Though to be honest, we live in the middle of 82 acres and their crowing does not bother us at all.

yep, they sure do get louder. I think mine start off sounding like one of those old bike horns( that you squeezed the bulb to make it honk) , then they eventually sound like a true rooster.

Oh I could sit and listen to my lil bantam roosters all day . They sound so cute.

Big Red crows and the lil bantams try and moch him . Its so comical .
