Will a raccoon kill a cat?

Can you keep the cats in at night? It's hard, I know. I have one that doesn't want to go out except at night but whatever's going on where you are is too high a price..........

My cat is afraid of the dark and won't go out after dark. He wakes me up if the light over the stove burns out. silly puss

but I'm glad all the same. We have all the normal predators here, and he is clueless.

I vote for the coyote. We were standing on the back porch & one walked between ours & the neighbor's house 8am on a Sunday morn. It looked right at us. One came by acording to Mom in broad daylight looking at my chicken pens just last week. We have cats & dogs that have disappeared. We only let our dogs out w/us us at any time I've stood outside in freezing rain to let them pee. Benji would still wander & even w/Mom calling him he just kept going. We haven't seen him since. I totally understand what your going thru. Coyotes consider pets a good meal. I miss mine but I'm mad at him too because he knew better. The little hard headed thing!! Coyotes are probably your problem.

We used to have a large black cat we found in the woods while camping, we took him home and kept him a s a pet. We lived down by the mississippi river so there were HUGE coons everywhere. Spike being a wild cat took on any coon in the yard, killed it and drug it to the front door and would howl until we would go out to see what he brought us. One in particular was HUGE at least twice the size of my cat but he managed to kill it (not without gaining bad puncture woulds at the base of his tail tho) But he survived, I guess it depends on the cat. I don't doubt a coon could kill a cat but they couldn't take on mine! I am soo sorry for your losses

I hope you nab the culprit soon

an oppossum will kill a cat as quick as a raccoon or other preditor. They have nasty teeth for sure. sorry you lost your cats. They do me a good service here. No mice or rats since they took up here as strays and no babies since they are neutered and have their rabies shots too. Jean

I'd say it depends on the cat, and on the coon. If the cat acts like prey it gets eaten, if it acts like another predator it won't. A big educated coon can kill just about anything within a certain size range. Some are rather battle hardened. Coons are very strong for their size. I'll be honest, if I come around the corner to find a coon in my stuff my reaction is not "you little !@#$, I'll get you", it's "can I help you get the lid off of that?". Then I go get the shotgun.

My bet is coyotes though. Not that it matters to your poor cats.

I also have all neutered barn cats(ONLY nice thing to do for them) and have no noticable rodents but the possum come in the daytime(only time cat food is out) and eat. they've always been docile(I pet them, yes I know they're wild,I actually have a job that requires me to have rabies shots) but raccoons, coyotes, owls are more likely culprits, especially in cold months when less food available(in Ohio, anyhow) I put the cat food out at a very early time now hoping to discourage possum.
