I have two roosters I have never seen them protect the hens, of which I have 14. How ever, I have two Guinea hens and they protect everyone. They will even break up a fight if the roosters go at it. Which they do once in a while. I have seen the guineas walk a stray dogs right off the property, and when they make their warning call, it's all heads up looking for the danger.
