I have a 10 wk old RIR chick that has canker. I researched and know for a fact that is what it is. I have her separated from the other chicks. I noticed this Friday evening. At first it was just problem swalling crumbles and a swollen throat. I noticed this morning that her tongue is yellowish. No visible growths yet. She can eat bread and soft food. Here is my dilemma: I have to go out of town Thurs and Fri. I can't find anyone in or near my area that has the correct meds and I have a long list of the correct treatments. I can order what I need but worry it won't get here until later in the wk and I won't be here to give all the doses so that she doesn't get worse. Plus I need to go ahead and treat the whole flock of chicks since I am not sure how long she has had this. I have some bactim but not sure if this would be safe or even would work for canker. I did find this info:

Name: Sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim (Commercial name: Bactrim, many others)

Description: Sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim is a synthetic antibacterial combination product that is bacteriostatic against a broad range of Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria.

Usage: Bacterial infections shown to be susceptible to the drug.

Adverse reactions: None that are common.

Dosage: 30 mg/bird twice daily for 7 days. 1800 - 3600 mg/gallon for 7 days.

Comments: A good drug in many cases of Gram negative bacterial infections. Some preparations dissolve poorly in water.

Would anyone with some knowledge let me know what they think. I will not give this to her or the others unless it is safe and will have some affect on the canker. I have even called all the fish stores for fish zole but none carry it. No vets will see or treat her around here. :barnie

I haven't found anything on the internet about treating canker with bactrim so will be trying to find some fish zole or other meds tomorrow. I haven't had any luck finding any of the meds listed in my area. No vet around here will treat her, either.

Bactrim is an antibiotic as you know and wont treat canker. Canker are protozoa, treatment is metronidazole found online as fishzole. Dosage is one 250mg tablet a day for 5 days. Follow up treatments with copper sulfate, 1/4 teaspoon per gallon of water for 3 days once a month will keep it in check.

Thanks, Jim, yes that was a very interesting read. Mine has nothing in her throat . Just some callousy lumps in her nostrils.
But I realize that it may be cancer or tumors. It may be something that can't be solved. They are hard and she won't let me touch them. If I hold her and try she turns blue. So I've left her alone.

I just ordered some "necropsy" shipping boxes. I think in the world of chicken, we need to keep educating ourselves and sharing. Like we are!

Thanks

Thanks Dawg. If I can't find any locally tomorrow then I will order from them. They are way cheaper on their 2-3 day shipping then other places. I just worry that would put me at getting it on Thursday or Friday. I will be gone Thurs and Fri for my sons surgery out of town. I know I can get some in Houston, where my son's surgery will be. Just a bit worried that either way she won't get started on the meds til Sat morning. :he
