Will bactrim treat canker in young chick?

Seminolewind, are you sure she doesn't have a respiratory infection? That could be mucous that has dried and hardened. I am still new so don't take my advice if you have had someone else tell you something different. :) I hope you find out what it is and are able to cure/treat her. Best of luck!

Mcmurrays sells "Immuno Charge" that helps a chick develope it's own immunities to infections. I don't know if you can get any where you are. It's like probiotics for chickens and is good for healing infections, too.

Thanks Chicken Nini. I will check it out. It might be something that will be good for after treating the chicks with fish zole.

I appreciate your advice! Unfortunately it's been there a year almost. And it's hard. No one here has had any respiratory issues, and there's no new chickens in. Maybe I should take her to a vet. If I can find one.

I believe I got metronidazole (fishzole) from twincitiespoultry. In tablets. Try there on line.

Canker usually results in cottage-cheesy lumps in the mouth and throat. And it's contagious and leaves the bird a carrier. If you have one chick with it and you're SURE it's canker, I'd advise putting it down, sorry.

The problem with diagnosing from the web is that there are several things with similar symptoms. You could be completely off base.

You were so right on being off base. She did not have canker after all. I am glad I didn't cull her. She had a piece of thread around the base of her tongue. I looked in her mouth i know over 24 times in a wk and a half. I gave her the meds for 10 days. Even tube fed her a few times. She still wasn't over it but it never got worse just stayed the same. Never saw it til one day. It was so thin and was laying toward the back of her throat. I guess some of it was trying to come loose. She had gotten an infection around the base. I snipped it then started her on antibiotics(cephalexin). She healed up but had lost some of the outer edges and the very tip of her tongue. She had to eat soft foods for a while and learn how to get it back far enough to swallow. She will be 5 months old in 3 wks. She is smaller than her sister but has always been so. I check her still daily and make sure she is getting enough to eat. So glad it wasn't canker and that makes sense why none of the others got it. Thanks for everyone's advice again.

Hi all, I have a 7 week old black australorp who is showing classic signs of canker. She has crusty yellow debri on one side of her beak, and this am it had a cottage cheese look to it. Lower beak is slightly swollen. She is active, fiesty, and eating well. I just started metronidazole, but obviously have concerns about her spreading it throughout my flock. I have her seperated right now, but will she ever be able to go back in her flock? Will she always be a carrier? What are the chances my other girls will come down with it? Please, any advice will be appreciated!! I hate to cull her because she is so young and active, but dont want to lose my whole flock :(
