Will chickens help my depression?

I to have Depression and do believe chickens help. And best of all is hatching eggs!! I also have ducks that are always happy to see me! I'm sure you will love them! Be sure to post pics ones you get them.

I think any animal can be beneficial, having something to focus on and keep busy with is always going to add some positive experiences into your life.

Yes I also have horses and I really believe that physical work helps a lot as well. Like cleaning the stalls, feeding and of course riding. Not sure about your doctor but mine likes me to stay active as much as posable. But then again he tells me not to drink to much caffeine too but I just can't stop drinking those stupid energy drinks....

Eh, it's just a little lizard! Maybe let's start on mealworms....!

Yes, its funny how people would much prefer to save something that was cute or majestic or large, rather than a shrew or an ant species or even a mealworm. Have you noticed you never see little, ugly or nasty creatures on any adverts for save the animals, I mean, who would send monthly payments to the STMF (Save The Mealworm Foundation).

JohnPeel, how many are you getting in 4 weeks ?

Im getting 6. We were going to get them from the egg farm a week or two ago, before they were all killed. But the farm phoned me and told me that they were not very well and were not allowed to give them to me and they would have to be killed. So the farm then told me that they are getting thousands of new ones between xmas and newyear, and said I could collect 6 in the first week in Jan. At least we can save a few from a short life of forced egg laying then the chop.

i also suffer the same illness...i think any pet helps but chickens are just the best to care for and love

Studies have shown that having pets are beneficial.That said there is a bit of a down side to the work involved,but imo totally worth it.

I sometimes complain about cleaning up after the animals,but when I did not have them I missed them. You might enjoy having some house chickens.One large or 2 of the smaller breed. I don't know how it is long term,but I always enjoy having a hen in the house short term,but cleaning the poop IMMEDIATELY is a must. I keep mine in a dog crate not roaming in a diaper. Just injured or sick ones inside,but I read people do keep them as pets inside much like people keeping parrots and other birds. I like watching my current resident and hearing her talk.

When I let the others out of the coop they will follow me around the yard for quite some time.Very nice to have them and watch them.

I think you would enjoy having some chickens. If not you could always rehome them if they did not help lift your spirits.

Oh no, I couldn't have a house chicken. It might help MY depression, but send my wife into one. There isnt a thing out of place in this house, even I get dusted daily.

Six is a good number to start with in my opinion. I started with six White Leghorns all girls.
And they give me such joy. Six also was a number I could handle.
Do you know what kind of chicks you are getting ?
