Will chickens return to a coop on their own?

Rookie here. I bought and raised chicks years ago when my kids were growing up. My rural property borders a slough with a creek which is pretty much a freeway for all types of predators. We also have the flying kind including an own that liked to bite their heads off at nite. Lost many birds to predators.

My original coop was 8x16x8'. owl flew in the open top at night but otherwise coop was effective.

Thinking about trying again. Question is will chickens naturally return to a coop at sundown; I can't really remember as it was almost 20 years ago. I'd prefer to let them roam free but don't want to just raise predator meals again.

advice welcomed. thx

Once your flock is comfortable in their coop, then YES they will return. When you get chicks or new chickens, keep them in the coop for a few days and they will learn that that is home! Good luck!

Yes they will return. If they are alive. You say you don't want to feed the predators, but that's what you'll be doing if you let them roam free.
