Will chickens roost in front of open windows & is it ok for them?

We had our roost under one of the windows and none of them would use it.
They all crowded in the nesting boxes. Once we moved it to a solid wall, they all used the roost.

I live in the Southeastern U.S., where it's very hot and humid. My chickens love the spot next to the window in their coop. They literally fought over it at first. Now the more dominant members of our flock always get what my husband calls "the number one spot" next to the window.

My roosts are 4 ft high, so I can easily examine my birds at night, with a droppings board at 3 ft off the floor. I also have roosts in front of the windows .... some run along side the window, others run INTO the window. My chooks have no problem reaching their roosts, and the all try to have the window views!
Good luck!

My chickens fight over the window seat too! The roost in my coop goes right under a window on both ends. The windows are covered with 1/2 hardware cloth and gets covered with plexi glass in the colder seasons. The rooster always ends up next to one window and the hens squeeze right up against him leaving tons of space on the rest of the roost. Those silly chickens!

Here's a pic of my new coop under constuction I hope to leave it as open as it is now, but I may cover the open side for a meter or so to darken the nest area in the mornings.

We get probably 2-3 weeks of freezing or below freezing weather here... and all the adults tend to keep on sleeping outside in the airy tarp covered area of the tractors. Only the very young and the elders bother to go in. In your weather, sounds like open window would be just fine.

We also have roosts in front of the window...one about 16 inches from the wall, the other 12 inches lower and 12 inches away from the wall roost. About 15 minutes before the rest of the flock goes from free ranging, I have one australorp that will got inside and claim the prime spot right in front of the window!

I have a window on the side of my roosts, the roosts butt right up to it and my hens will not roost in front of it.

My roost start at 30 inches and no ladder is required.

Sorry for the potential for confusion Apparently my old username was a little bothersome so I changed it but I am the OP EvilGod, just with a new moniker. :)

Perhaps you need something like this :)

I would suggest making a printing one but you would have to laminate it or they would eat it.
