Curious —
Brooding chicks ourselves in a brooder, chicks seem like they are always eating, as they are warm in there and run around.
Chicks outside with Mama need to be under her quite often to keep warm, which means they aren’t out running around eating as much, or like I typically see with brooding them ourselves.

Chicks in a brooder may eat more out of boredom.

Another factor is chicks in a brooder often have artificial light (whether a red heat bulb, or someone leaving the lights on for them) so they'll eat around the clock.

Chicks raised in natural light (whether with a hen, or in a brooder with a no light heat source like a plate or heating pad) will sleep through the night so they naturally eat less.
