Will Geese girdle trees?

Quote:
With geese anything is possible! If you try something radical like feeding your geese they are unlikely to eat the bark of your trees. mine always had trees in their day enclosure and never lost a tree, but I can't completely rule it out because pf the huge number of different trees. Dead wood is another story, once it has started to decay and get punky they seem to like picking at it.

im not sure of live trees...but anything else they will destroy...my run pens i used trees as posts..along with metal kind..the wood ones look rat chewed along with there wooden house....not sure if the geese actually destroyed the year old sampling apple trees..but..one of the many critters around here just happened to chew off tops ..right where the geese hang out in the afternoons....guess would be wise to wrap base of trees with a stiff plastic..but then again..might make them wanna test that out also....

Just put a hoop of chicken wire (secure well) around any trees you don't want to risk losing.
Geese are notorious for nibbling, shredding and chewing.
If you don't want anything ruined keep them away from it.
I also use 2 ft. high vinyl coated gardening fencing to keep them out of areas I don't want them in.
Its easy to set up or move and you can step over it easily as well.
Having said that my geese don't bother my mature trees much
but they have lots of grass to keep them occupied.

I took all of your comments into consideration while working on the layout this weekend. I just jumped onto my tractor and rearranged a different spot to put these rascals when I finally get them.

I will make the trees that are important to me safe from their busy beaks. The trees are previous Christmas trees we had planted over the years, and then each time one of our 2 kids gave me a grandchild, I planted a new tree the day they were born. I have 7 grandchildren trees and 25 Christmas trees that they will not be allowed to mess with. ;>)

We finished fencing around where the geese and duck sheds will be. Rain, very hard rain, kept us from finishing the sheds.

Unfortunately, the lady I had planned to buy 8 geese from today, turned out to be rude and uppity. I don't do well with folks like her, so now I have to find a different source for my geese., even if they cost me double what I would have been paying her. grrrrr

Anyway... thank you for your tips and guidance on all of this.

Cheers,

Dan

One more thing. You folks have me convinced that I should put fencing around my boat and Airstream too. I sure hope I like raising geese, they are starting to be a pain and I haven't even bought them yet. LOL
