Will hatchery strain orpingtons go broody?

I read somewhere 5 minutes ago that they wont go broody if they are hatchery birds and thats my whole reasoning for getting them.

I can't say I ever heard of that. But, hatchery birds are raised to lay more eggs. Broodies like to back off the egg production. Might be true. Go buy some exhibition birds and do a comparison.

I had my first one go broody yesterday

she has 10 BO eggs. She is hatchery stock, from Welp in April '09.

Yes, they will, but not all of them. I have two hatchery Buff Orps. One went broody twice in her four years of life, the other never has. I also have a breeder quality Buff Orp who has raised chicks once (she is not 2 yrs old yet). I think the breeder quality ones who are far removed from hatchery stock probably go broody much more or more reliably than the hatchery types. Same with RIRs. Most hatchery RIRs never go broody, but the breeder types do quite often, actually.

My hatchery Buff Orpingtons have been very broody. They came from Ideal Poultry. I had 2, lost one to a predator. Both were broodies. The one I have left is one of my main broody hens that I use all the time. She is a fantastic mother.

I have a friend who has 2 hatchery Buff Orps that have never gone broody. I'm not sure which hatchery they came from, or if that makes a difference...
