Will hens challenge each other?

Have you noticed preening going on after they go to roost? That's where those feathers probably come from. It's just their personal feather maintenance.
 
From the time they are chicks until they are fully matured, they are doing one long, slow molt. They need to grow feathers that go with their newer, larger size and they have to get rid of their old, smaller feathers before they can grow the new ones.

Young chickens do a lot of sparing as they mature. Even established flocks have their little squabbles from time to time. Adult hens get broody or molt and that can cause a little more fussing, too.
 
Good to know this is normal....thought I had a mixed breed issue or something. I have al BA and one Americana that was the bully at first and now all including the roo put her in check! She has since calmed and now two others are trying to fill the position....love my roo because when they fight he goes on a rampage and calms everyone down Lol'
