Will leaf lettuce grow back? (gardening)

Sad day in the garden. Something got hold of all my lettuce. I've grown it for years without any pest issues, but it was bound to happen eventually.

I know leaf lettuce will regrow, but I'm not really sure how damaged a plant can be before it just dies back. I usually only pick a few leaves from each plant and never really take anything all the way to the ground like this.

Wish I knew what did it. At first I suspected deer, but could also be rats or birds I guess. Little chunks of lettuce were thrown all about, so I don't think it was insects. Chickens to NOT have access to this garden area, so they have been acquitted 😩

That may very well regrow, but cover it as the critter will return.

Yes absolutely. I'll be rolling out the bird netting today.

Hopefully its not rats, never actually seen them in the garden but I know they are here... and I know a little bird netting wont stop them!

If it's a groundhog, he will wait for them to grow back, and get them again right before you plan on picking them. They are better climbers than most people realize. Don't know if you have them in your area though.

Interesting about the groundhog, I checked but it doesn't look like they are native to Texas.

My deer suspicion may have been right. Dogs went crazy last night and when I peaked out I saw a young deer in the yard. We live right off a busy road so they don't usually come into our yard, but I guess this one hasn't figured things out yet 😒
