Will my Chickens Eat My Fig Trees?

So "layer" feed is less than 16% protein?
No, check the label different brands may have different amounts.. from 15-16-17- or even 22% depending on manufacturer.. just that 16% protein (often the standard in "layer") is consider the minimum to keep a light bodied layer like leghorn in good condition.

Regular plus oyster on the side sounds like a great idea. I'm pretty sure my birds are going to be spoiled.
Regular being the term you are using for "grower", flock raiser, all flock, starter, meat bird.. ehh their just confusing...

The only thing that spoils a bird IMO is excess treats like meal worms, scratch, BOSS, or ANYTHING that is offered in EXCESS that could cause medical issues or even diminish longevity.. keeping things balanced with good nutrition that's just doing your best, not spoiling.

And I'm not saying "layer" feed is not good enough or bad.. there ARE plenty of dual purpose birds lived long lives (8+ years, even roosters) having never used anything BUT layer! I'm not a fear monger.. just a harbor of too much information.. so thank you for letting me share so you can YOUR best choice according to your resources and thought process etc! It's great that we have these options! :thumbsup

I just wanted to check back with you, as my chicks are over 8 weeks old now, so they should be getting off the starter food soon (my bag is getting low anyway as well...damn, can they eat). TSC has Purina broiler feed 22% protein, $15.49 for 40 lbs. Good for my birds, yes? I will put out some oyster shell too in about 10 more weeks.

That broiler feed will likely be *about* the same as starter and a very decent price actually.

You don't have to get your birds of "starter" that's just a confusing term that makes us switch feed often. ;)

I think you got this though! :thumbsup
