Will my Great Pyr ever SHUT UP?

Ours do the same, Milo & Shilo (siblings) will bark at anything or things we can't see or hear. It never fails that as soon as I sit on the bed to get in they start up.I literally pray they'll be quiet that nite. We knew that it's what we were getting in getting them. They'll bark at me when I'm in the front yard and don't know it. Lately I've been giving them a shot in the mouth of Bitter Yuck a anti chew spray that's made of Rosemary and water, now when I show it to them thru the window they lower their head knowing what's comming if they keep barking. Sometimes it works other times they just can't help it, they're just doing their job as a guardian,it's what they were bred for. Though I'm not sure what they would even do if something came in, they just turned a year old. I don't like shock collars most people abuse it and they have so much fur you'd have to shave their neck for it to work. I just don't think it would stop them. There is a birdhouse looking thing that you can buy for when a neighbor has a barking dog that puts out ultrasonic sounds I thought about trying but I don't wanna hurt our chickens who share the yard with them.Again I don't know that it would work it's just to much of who they are.
It definetly helps to take them for a nice loooong walk in the evening or a play date to wear them out so they'll sleep later or train them to use a treadmill if you can't walk them that far. It's just part of life with any of these types of breeds. It drives us crazy too, but we love them anyway. The only surfire way is to bring them in at night.

We're open to suggestions as well.

We used to have a AmStaff that could set off the breaking glass burglar alarm with her bark. We finally had to disconnect it. She was a great dog though!

Basically, no.

The evening Barking Hour is their way of saying, "I live here, and all you fox/coyote/fishercat buggers better keep out or I will eff you up."

If it's a problem for hubby...well, those earplugs they make for shooting ranges work great!

From the research I did, this is a trait of the Pyr's, it is one of the ways they guard, they announce their presence to warn off predators. It is also the reason I decided on a Maremma instead!

And the slobber...

How big is your dog?

My boy is about 6 months old now, he was 75 pounds at 5 months. His father throws large male pups and we were told to expect him to be around 120-130 at maturity. So far, no slobber.

Pyr slobber isn't bad, all things considered. I used to think it was nasty, because mine would drink a lot of water and then come put his head in your lap. Then I got a Newfoundland. Trust me, the Pyr slobber is nothing.

When I was showing obedience in Utility a long time ago I would sometimes have to go after a Pyr that was also showing at the time. The ring stewards would have to wipe the mats after the Pyr did its articles because it would leave so much slobber.
