My main concern now is that I need to find a feed for winter that is 20%protien. That is turning out hard to do. So far all I have come up with is purinia. I will be doing some of my own mixing as we will be growing greens like kale and such. But I would love to find a good base to start with so they keep good condition in the winter when they are not out free ranging. I have not had a chance to get to my local CO-OP to see if they might have a good game or turkey with that protien percentage so I haope i will luck out there.
I have been looking for a grain mill (not a business, but an antique appliance with a crank that one turns by hand). If I get anywhere with this project, I'll let y'all know.
I just found a 20% feed from Bartlett Milling. It also has something called Apex added, which is a natural Botanical product consisting of Aniseed, Garlic, Horseradish, and Juniper.
They are located in Statesville NC, and since you are from Eastern TN, I would think a local supplier might have it.
there are 3 little and I mean little feed stores in my area you can not get purena anything all we can get is Burkmann, and tripple trust, and every now and then Formaxx personaly I like the formaxx feeds, but the man at one of the feed stores says that formaxx is burkmann. I do not like to buy the burkmann feed from him everytime we buy it it has mold in the bags another words the feed is moldy. I refuse to feed my chickens moldy food. the burkmann chick starter makes my chicks poop like crazy and it stinks BAD and every time I we put them on the ground they get cocci. right now I am trying the tripple trust. and feed here is not cheap.tripple trust layer pellets are 17.00 a bag for 15% the burkmann is 11.00 for 20% protein layer. formaxx when we can find it is 12.75 a bag. but the last time we bought it from the same man it was moldy too. I don't know what to do about ours. I can't afford 17.00 a bag for layer feed. I can't drive 100 miles to buy feed and that is the nearest to us round trip.
Just a fun fact... Purina makes TSC feed, its just bagged different for them and they are not allowed to advertise it. If you look closely enough at the bag it says.
Check local farmers - if there are any. Just got set up with a farmer that grinds/mixes their own feed to correct nutitional contents (Organic too!). Have to drive an hour to get it but, a friend and I worked it out so we each alternate trips. It is also about the same price as our feed store.

Looked them up they are not local have to travel over 100 miles to get to a supplier.. That is a big problem here. I found a local Nutrena dealer but then again to low on protien.
